Choosing the Best Blinds for Your Living Room

Pikes Peak Interiors is the best place to go for living room blinds. We offer quality vertical and horizontal blinds by Hunter Douglas. Theresa, our interior designer, has been helping customers like you choose the perfect living room blinds for over 30 years. She listens closely to your needs and has an eye for creating beautiful rooms. When it comes to choosing the perfect blinds for your living room, you’ll love working with us.

Horizontal Options for Living Room Blinds

There are a variety of options when it comes to blinds. Horizontal blinds come in over 13 product lines and each product line offers various options for color, style and operating system. You can choose from wood, alternative wood or metal. Each product is designed to help you control the amount of light and privacy in your room. At Pikes Peak Interiors, we also offer custom draperies if you wish to layer the look with a soft curtain or valance. Our wood blinds come in traditional colors and stains as well as a wire-brushed line for a more weathered look. Genuine hardwood blinds give your home a warm, comfortable look in a variety of colors and stains. Alternative wood blinds tend to be more durable than real wood. They come in neutrals, whites and off whites. Wood and alternative wood blinds give your window a crisp clean look. They are easy to clean and perfect for keeping allergens to a minimum. If you are concerned about covering your view, our Reveal® Aluminum blinds with MagnaView® offers twice the viewing area as a traditional 2” blind. We also have a Natural Elements blind for those who want something more than an aluminum blind. Natural elements feature wood tassels and wands as well as a wood top and bottom accent.

Vertical Options for Living Room Blinds

If your windows are larger, vertical blinds are a great choice. Our vertical blinds come in 5 distinct product lines providing you with an endless selection of colors, textures and materials. Vertical blinds come in wood, alternative wood, metal, fabric and a variety of solid colors or patterns. One of our most stunning vertical blinds for large window expanses is our Skyline® Gliding Window Panels. They feature panels up to 17” for a stunning look that is quite dramatic. For living rooms with multiple windows in varying sizes and shapes, you can mix and match vertical and horizontal window treatments in the same color and material to create the unity you need for your space. If you like the idea of vertical blinds but want to soften them up a bit, our Cadence® soft vertical blinds have a unique “S” curved vane that mimics soft drapery.

Three New Kinds of Shades

You’ve heard of roller shades, but did you know there are other kinds of shades?

Shades have been around for a long time, but human innovation goes on in all sectors and even shades are changing.

Honeycomb Shades

Honeycomb shades get their name because they resemble a honeycomb, but they don’t come with honey or bees. Each row of the shade is pleated to contain air cells. The cells trap air and provide a buffer between inside and outside temperatures.

Honeycomb shades work very well in places where strong sunlight warms up a room or the bitter cold air of winter seeps through the windows. Hunter-Douglas makes an insulated honeycomb shade called Architella that is so insulating that it has qualified for federal rebates!

Cellular Roller Shades

Most cellular shades work by folding themselves up as you lift them, but they are available in a roller shade too. The difference is that a roller shade is very neat when it’s completely rolled up, giving the window a minimalist look. Add a valance and your rolled up shade is invisible.

Hunter-Douglas makes a cellular roller shade called Sonnette. Since all of their shades are custom made, you can order it with a lifting system that operates with a button or even one that allows you to program the shades to open and close on a schedule.

Roman/Honeycomb Hybrid Shades

If you like the ruffled look of a roman shade, but don’t want to miss out on the energy efficiency of a honeycomb shade, you can get a hybrid. These shades have a softer look than a structured honeycomb shade, but they still buffer the outside temperature and can even help with the acoustics in a room.

The Solera shade from Hunter-Douglas can be pushed up from the bottom or pushed down from the top, giving you different ways to bring sunlight into the room and retain your privacy.

You can pick from dozens of fabrics when ordering these shades. Whether you want insulating window treatments, privacy or protection from our strong Colorado Springs sun, contact us and we can help you design the perfect shades for your windows!

Why Roller Shades are More Popular Than Ever

Halloween took place earlier this week, so let’s ask a ghostly sort of question.

Have you ever been sound asleep, snug in your bed, only to be rudely awakened by a roller shade snapping up on its own?

Were ghosts opening the shades? Or were roller shade systems originally designed with a flaw that caused them to mysteriously snap up?

We aren’t sure about the ghosts, but we do know that older roller shades have ratchets that hold them in place. If the ratchets become dirty or weak, they can let go of the shade unexpectedly and cause it to snap up suddenly.

Newer shades work better and the ghosts will have to work harder, since they no longer snap up on their own. The mechanisms have been improved, as have the styles and functionality of roller shades.

Roller Shades Come in More Patterns

In the old days, it was hard to find a roller shade that had two colors in it, let alone a pattern that really worked in your home, but things have changed. You can get them in an endless variety of patterns. Matching valances are also available, giving the shade a more finished look.

Two Roller Shades in One

The Solar Screen Shade is a variety of roller shade that gives you two shades in one. The two operate independently, allowing you to put the transparent solar screen down and the opaque shade up. With these, you don’t lose your view and your furnishings are protected from the sun’s glare during the day. You can easily put down the opaque shade at night for privacy.

Roller Shades are Easy to Clean

Roller shades are very easy to clean. They are made of polyester and most need nothing more than periodic vacuuming. Some, but not all, can handle a bit of moisture if you need to wipe a stain off, but you’ll probably never have to do this since polyester is naturally very resistant to stains.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective, minimalist look in a product that is easily operated, roller shades may be for you. Contact us today and we can help you find the perfect window coverings for your home… with or without ghosts.

Why Custom Draperies Are Superior to Store Bought

If you have never considered designing custom draperies before, once you read this, you may never go back to store bought again. Imagine having window treatments that make your room look like it belongs in a magazine. When you choose custom draperies, you are choosing to upgrade your style and create a window treatment that looks amazing and fits your personality, style and décor. Custom draperies are superior to store bought and believe it or not, they aren’t that far out of reach.

What’s So Special About Custom Draperies?

Custom Draperies are not mass-produced. They are individually designed to fit you and your windows. With custom draperies, you can decide if you want the fabric to go up to the ceiling or pool onto the floor. You can also choose the exact color fabric you want. You aren’t limited by colors the store has decided are popular. You also aren’t limited by one or two styles. Custom draperies can be designed exactly like you want them. We will either match a design you find or we can help you create a design you like.

You choose the fabric, the color, the hardware and any embellishments. We will guide you so that the fabric or hardware you choose is suitable to the design you pick. When you purchase store bought draperies, you have to choose your own draperies and hardware; often the end result is not what you had hoped for. You may be drawn to store bought draperies because they are cheaper, but in the long run, they don’t look as nice or last as long.

Designing Custom Draperies – Worry Free

For some people, the process of designing custom draperies might seem intimidating, but at Pikes Peak Interiors, we take all the guesswork out of the process. Our design consultant, Theresa will work with you closely to determine the type of custom draperies or custom curtains you need and together you will design the perfect solution for your windows. We have the ability to create a digital display of your finished window treatment so you can see what it will look like and if you will like it. If you aren’t satisfied, you can design something else and keep making changes until you determine what you really like. Once you have a working design, we will begin making it for you. Our local craftsmen are exceptional and each detail is done to perfection.
